Metal Flowers

I am *so* excited about these metal flowers, because:

1) they photograph well {since I love taking & editing pictures, but am no expert}
2) wasn’t sure if my crazy idea would turn out at all, but everything worked
3) they are truly handmade – as in, I didn’t use any pre-designed items, but made all the components myself

The rolled flowers were made using the same technique I use for rolled paper flowers – but since these are metal, they are much more durable than the paper ones. I hand cut them, rolled them, and finished with some of my handmade head pins.

The layered flowers were also cut out by hand, then colored and shaped a bit. I used Vintaj patinas, embossing powder, alcohol ink, and acrylic paint to color them. {Same materials used to color the rolled flowers – I’m working on a blog series on coloring metal, so explanations of how to use each one coming soon.}

I’m so excited to have handmade flowers that I can use in jewelry projects. And I can’t believe that all the paper crafting techniques I tried worked so well with metal. My sheet was a random scrap I found in the junky shed I’m clearing out {it’s totally going to fall over if we have a big earthquake, and there are blackberries growing in through the roof — so it’s time to demolish it and start over!} The metal itself is probably aluminum, and is thicker than foil, but still thin enough to cut with sharp scissors. Anything much thicker and I would have had to break out the jewelry saw, which is much more time consuming {but now that I’m thinking about it, something to add to my to-do list}.

This one, colored with embossing powder, might be my favorite in real life, but all the shimmer and metallic gold was tough to photograph:
